Editing Images to Improve Training

How impactful can an image be? In training it can make the difference between someone understanding the information and someone not understanding.  Let us talk about Human Performance Improvement?  Depending on your understanding of the topic you can be excited about that question or a big sigh.  I have to teach some sort of HPI information to people daily and how it is presented matters.  There are people that learn through talking and explaining others are much more visual.  Let us look at the image below.

This is a basic photo pulled from a copyright free site.  It is an amazing photo, but how do you incorporate the information that you want to convey into this?  Well, that is where photo editing comes in.  Many different programs will allow you to edit images, paint is a well-known one and while it has its benefits there is also not a lot that it can do.  Microsoft photo editor is another that has a lot more tools but also takes a little more practice and training to make it useful.
There is a way to make some good changes to images for training purposes that really works well for me.  PowerPoint surprisingly is an amazing app for this reason.  You can build bubbles, flow charts, and anything you want if you import the images then move your additions to the front.  After you complete edits then you can do a snip-it program to capture what you really want.  Lets look at the same image with the talked about edits.

This is a great representation of how you can take a photo and adjust to make it very impactful for a training course.  This would make anyone in my class think about this situation in an HPI format and make them understand how this can be used in real life circumstances. We need to find creative ways to be able to get the information to individuals.  I have found that you must used everything in your tool bag to ensure that people learn the information you are trying to teach them.  Remember death by PowerPoint or lecture is not always the best way to information into peoples heads for good.  Thank you for reading this and remember that you have a ton of tools to fall back on.  Happy Training.

  1. That is an excellent example of how an imagine can spark thought and interest. This was a good post. I do always agree that death by PowerPoint or lecture can ruin someone’s interest in a topic. We have so many tools now available to us that just lecturing and utilizing only PowerPoint is not enough to keep people engaged.
